It's time to update the photos in our home and I'm going for a very clean and modern look, I feel good about this shoot (i've attempted this once before and didn't get quite the look i wanted. it's a very hard thing photographing your own kids!) and am getting very excited about my little project. Can't wait to show you the end result. Two words, BIG & BOLD. Ooooo if that doesn't send chills down your spine then it's probably because this isn't your kid to put on your walls! But I imagine you know that feeling of getting your photos up on your wall right?! Why is it so hard to do sometimes?!

I nearly had to bribe a dozen reeses, which he likes to call, "reese's puffs" I think he gets confused with the cereal, either way that was what worked!

Ever had your images stolen from your blog? Last year I realized someone was swiping my images to use on their facebook page, it about killed me to see MY OWN children being claimed by someone else! Weather you are a photographer or just a mom who loves to put images of their children on blogs/facebook protect yourself with a watermark. On a side note...

Someone recently pointed out I'm using a lot more black and white processing, it's true! I LOVE IT! I always offer copies of black and white images when clients order the disk of images. I love having the timeless option of black and white. AND I love how that finish can go with any decor in your house or grandma's house, or on dad's desk at work etc... love me some black and white!

Live and learn, isn't that what we do?! I'll say this has been a year of learning and growing. I've dealt enough with this and that and it's time I lay down some serious rules and tighten my belt when it comes to my photography business. Anyways, I'm stoked for what 2012 will bring. One of which is a new website... Ahhh, I can't wait to get it up and going!

This boy just makes me smile, he was so playful and happy during our session. He was so cute on the bed with his little stuffed lamb, they had the cutest name for it, Pork Chop. Adorable right?! So I thought I'd do a little post and answer some questions for everyone! Hope this can help you one way or another. Hi Katie,

My name is Michelle, and I'm the lucky mom of two awesome little ones...Cooper (4) and my newest, Avery (8mos). I love, love your pictures. If I lived near you I would be calling you in a second. I find myself throughout the day seeing moments of their day that I want to capture on film. But my yucky point and shoot leaves me feeling more frustrated than inspired. :)

I want to make the leap to a SLR, so could you please, oh please give me a recommendation of a good beginner SLR that will fit the photographer in me that's dying to get out!! Also, what lenses would be appropriate to use.

Any advice you could give would be SOOO appreciated!

Oh I totally know what you are talking about! Point and shoot cameras often miss the moment you are trying to capture, which is one reason why I've never gone back to one :) I guess once you upgrade, you can't stand that 3 second delay. You truly won't regret getting the dslr, it's a fabulous investment that you'll enjoy for years and years and years.

For parents who are looking for a great camera to catch all the action at the house, on the field, during concerts, recitals etc. I would recommend the entry dslr's / lenses and that you stick with either Nikon or Cannon. Is one brand better than the other? I really feel that they are both right up there at the top, so you can't go wrong with either one. Just remember that whatever camera body you buy, you'll need to buy the same brand of lenses.

OK well I am a Nikon girl, why did I choose Nikon? It just felt right! I went to the store picked up the different models and played around and Nikon and I just clicked, I didn't care for how Canon felt in my hands, I didn't like the way the camera settings were laid out. But tons of people love canon, just not me. I highly recommend you go to your local camera store and hold the one you want, ask questions and compare. I did that same thing and then bought mine online because the price was better!

For Nikon I would suggest the D3100 14.2MP holy smokes did I just type 14.2 mega pixels?! That's crazy crisp images folks. This camera is affordable $549 comes with 18-55 lens (we'll talk about lenses below), lightweight - you'll thank me when you have one more thing to add to your purse, you don't want a heavy clunker! And it will blast out amazingly beautiful images just on "auto" mode AND this little baby does video, so you can kiss your old video recorder away. Two in one can't be beat!

Nikon D3100

Cannon T3 Rebel

This camera is right up there with the Nikon 3100 it has a smaller Mpixel at 12 vs the 14, but that tiny difference isn't going to kill you. The 12 MP is still amazing! This baby also does video, it's compact, comes with the 18-55 lens and will provide you with fantastic images.

You can't go wrong with either the Nikon or Canon entry dslr!

Now let's talk lenses for a bit. The kit lens, which is the lens your camera comes with, is OK. It's a great all around lens and does the job well. But if you are looking for images where the background is super blurry and your focus is nice and crisp, I would suggest investing in the 50mm 1.8. At around $100 - $150 you will be able to get beautiful portraits. I seriously take 90% of my photos my 50mm, it's my go to and it's always attached to my camera. You'll love it, I promise. But just a fair warning, this is a "fixed" lens, which means you can't zoom in or out. So if you want to zoom in closer on your subject you have to move your feet :)

I used my 50mm to create that - perdy huh.

I also used my 50 on this picture. Love how the flower

stands out an blurred splashes of color are in the back.

What about sports or the dance recital, or concert where you, the parent, are way way in the back or on the sideline and can't get up close and personal... what lens do you want then? I would suggest a zoom lens. The photos below were taken with my zoom. Love me some zoom action!

Nikon has two great entry lenses...

Nikon 18-200mm (Those numbers 18-200 tell you how far you can zoom in or out, this lens has amazing range! It's a little pricy, but worth it if you want those great images and don't want to budge out of that lawn chair on the sidelines!)

Nikon 55-200mm

This is just what I would suggest to the ma or pa who want to invest in a great camera to capture all the action going on at home. These growing up years only last so long, in my opinion, it's totally worth the splurge! You won't regret it!

sometimes it's just too hard to keep a straight face

We were down at the studio tonight. I had some time in between shoots so I thought I'd capture the boys. I had them get down to their little skinnies, and threw them on the bed. They laughed, wrestled, screamed and bounced their little hearts out. Their momma's heart melted as she clicked away. How did these two grow up so fast? I love more than anything their friendship together and I feel like I was able to really capture that tonight.

PS Do you still believe studio portraits are boring? I'd like to prove you wrong. I always do my best to create comfortable and fun studio sessions so I can capture YOUR family being true to yourselves. Let your kids personalities shine even if it's indoors, capture the relationship between siblings, parents or a new baby. Feel free to ask me questions or if you ever have ideas, send them my way.

It's that time of year... when I'm busy busy busy!!! LOVE all my amazing clients! Honestly, I feel so lucky to be surrounded with such fabulous people. I'm booking up quickly, so if any of you are wanting photos (especially for the Holiday season) contact me - October is almost booked!

All week I've been shooting for the Green Smoothie Girl (have you checked out her new blog lately?! This woman is amazing and is doing so many great things, she has WONDERFUL COOKBOOKS for those of you who are looking for daily yummy healthy recipes!).

Today I had another food shoot, this time with Karen Peterson from 365 Days of Slow Cooking blog.
She has a new cookbook coming out this spring, and WOWZA did her food look yummy at the studio. We shot all morning long and had a great time.

That's about wraps up my week besides late night editing and early morning regret of not getting enough sleep eye! I'm off to Wyoming tomorrow to do a family shoot and a guy who is a falconer. Totally stoked about this one.

This is the second time I've photographed these darling two. They were both SO well behaved! I'd say, "give brother a big hug" and they'd look at each other with smiles, embrace, then look at the camera and laugh! SO sweet, so cute, so loving... so not what happens in my house when I ask my boys to hug! I guess that's what happens when you have a girl? Less wrestling, pinching and gut punches?!

The second best part about this session was that Tiff invited me to join them for lunch afterwards. We ate just around the corner from my studio at Ekami Thai. They have the yummiest Thai food, the curry was phenomenal, so warm and creamy. You know a curry is exceptional if when you are typing at 9am and you think to yourself, "I could go for some curry right about now". It's GOOD. I know its going to be a mad temptation for me to pass up every time I'm down at the studio. OK time for me to go get breakfast.

These no-bakes were so good we had to make 2 batches within the week!

My boys LOVED making the popsicles and eating them outside.

And I LOVED giving them because I knew they were so much healthier than the store-bought kind.

I made and took the raspberry lemonade to a party, everyone thought is was so refreshing.

(Surprisingly quite good. Sweet and satisfying.)

Sweet Potato Lentil Soup

(I photographed this soup at the end of the working day and I was famished! When all was done, I think I ate 3 bowls of this deliciousness while lounging in my chair with my feet up. So comforting and full of flavor. Can't wait to make it again.)

Lentil Tacos

(So yummy in corn tortillas with fresh tomato, avocado, cilantro and a splash of lime. I actually made this exact meal for dinner tonight because I liked it so much when I tried it after the shoot. Lucky me I have leftovers for tomorrows lunch!)

I can't remember the name of this, but it's a breakfast quinoa dish with fresh fruit and nuts.

A great hearty way to start out the day.

Apple Dip
(This was a creamy peanut butter yogurt dip. A perfect sweet and satisfying way to eat an apple when you need that extra something.)

I once again was able to work with the lovely Green Smoothie Girl. She will be publishing another yummy cookbook and lucky me, I got to photograph and try a few of the dishes. YUM! I made the lentil tacos tonight for dinner and my family loved them! Have you checked out her site yet? Don't wait a minute longer! Get ready to be filled to the brim with great food advice, yummy recipes and confidence to (gulp) make and drink a green smoothie. Food Photography | Latest Personal Project

Meet my new personal project is to take pictures of new recipes that I try out. That way I can work on my cooking and photo skills! Two of my favorite things! I hope you go check out the blog... it's still pretty new so make sure to come back and visit. ENJOY!

Here is a quick sample of what my posts will look like. Well the general idea at least.

Robyn's Peanut Butter Cookies
1 1/2 C whole wheat flour (white-wheat is best for baking)
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 cup butter or coconut oil
1/2 cup peanut butter (organic, peanuts only - no rapeseed or sugar corn syrup)
1 cup Sucanat
*1 egg (organic free range)
1/2 tsp vanilla

1. In a bowl, beat the butter or coconut oil, then add the peanut butter and Sucanat and continue beating. Add the egg and vanilla to the mixture and beat. Add the dry ingredients and mix well. Shape in 1" balls, place 2" apart and flatten with fork. Bake at 375* for 8 minutes.

*We didnt have any eggs on hand so I used a little trick that my Vegan friend Katrina taught me. In place of an egg use 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed with 3 tablespoons water. Let rest in a bowl for 3 min then add to your recipe. We couldnt taste a difference! Using flaxseeds in place of eggs is a great vegan trick for baking, but you don’t have to be vegan to benefit from this great substitution. Flaxseeds are a nutritional powerhouse and sneaking some into baked goods is an easy way to get some of their wonderful nutrients into your diet.

Green Smoothie Girl Cookbooks | Utah Food Photographer

For the past year I've been working with the Green Smoothie Girl, taking photographs for her cookbooks and now the books are available!

I know I've talked a bit about food here on this blog, and I know without a doubt I've talked about green smoothies. These books are filled with AWESOME recipes that are healthy, yummy and sooo good for you.

I know a new year brings many new beginnings and if I were to suggest any one of these books it would be the 12 step program. I'll tell you more about it below.

This book is the bomb. It has EVERYTHING you need to know about how to incorporate healthy eating into your lifestyle. What I love most about this book is she doesn't just tell you DO THIS DO THAT, Robyn goes through step by step and tells you exactly WHY it is important for you to make that healthy switch. The girl knows her stuff and has a great way of sharing her information without being overbearing.

Two years ago I came across the Green Smoothie Girl website, since then our family has been enjoying green smoothies, sprouting and dehydrating, we eat the "good for you" fats, whole grains and have learned that you don't need all that junk food! I for one can say it has changed my life. I feel SO MUCH better when I eat this way, and that's why I am such a promoter for it!

Whew! I spent last week in Philadelphia doing family sessions and now I am back and busy as ever. Last night I met my pillow at 4.30AM... What am I thinking?!

Needless to say I am busy editing and still doing sessions here in SLC.

I haven't been updating my blog these past few weeks for a number of reasons.

The most exciting reason is I'm getting a new face... er my photography blog is. A client site is in the works to help make everything run nice and smooth for all my lovely clients.

I can't wait for this new blog site to come together!

In the meantime, you'll just have to be patient with me and know that lots of good things are around the corner. Hope you all are enjoying this beautiful autumn season!
